Cantonese part-time programmes

​廣東話兼讀課程

A wise choice for busy professionals to learn Chinese language progressively.

These programmes were first launched in 2007 with less than 30 students in CUHK. They have then flourished to attract more than 250 students per school term to study in different locations. They are less intensive and possess a longer duration than the full-time programmes to achieve a similar level of proficiency.

Weekday evening new class in January, April, July and October.

Saturday class in January, May and September.

Course load: 2 to 3 sessions a day, 1 to 2 days per week, 40 sessions per quarter, lessons on weekday evenings or weekend daytime.

Class location: CUHK Shatin campus.

 
Foundation Certificate Programme in Chinese (Cantonese) for Non-Chinese Speakers
非華語人士粵語基礎證書課程

 

4 months to one year. Minimum 80 study hours.

 

Expected learning outcome: 

For elementary entrants: 

Able to ask and respond to simple questions, convey minimal meaning and satisfy a very limited number of immediate needs.

For intermediate entrants: 

Able to participate in simple conversations on predictable topics, obtain information by asking and answering questions, combine learned materials to communicate personal meanings, can satisfy basic personal needs and social demands.

粵語(華語人士)證書課程

 

修課時間約兩個學期 (半年至九個月),最少八十課時。

 

本課程為對廣東話有興趣、來港工作或定居的華語人士而設,通過生活化情景、實用的詞彙、簡明的語法介紹及密集的語音練習提高學生運用粵語的能力,減少甚至脫離地方口音,融入香港的生活。課程由淺入深、互相銜接、自成體系。本課通過精簡講授,以香港的社會及文化為題材,使學員瞭解並熟悉普粵在語音、詞彙、語法等方面的差異,把更多的時間放在聽、說等方面的綜合訓練,以培養語言技能、尤其是口頭表達能力為目標。初級粵語綜合訓練旨在引介粵語基礎知識,內容則重聽、講技能。

 

粵語(華語人士)文憑課程

 

修課時間約五個學期 (約1.5年),最少二百課時。

 

本課程為對廣東話有興趣、來港工作或定居的華語人士而設。中級粵語綜合訓練以小組討論及多媒體教學練習進一步提升學生的粵語聽力及口語能力,課題包括本地文化及社會狀況。高級粵語綜合訓練裝備學生超越一般交談,在不同場合、不同內容,都能自如得體的運用廣東話,並訓練學生滿足工作中絕大部分的廣東話要求,包括正式場合的表達及公開演說等等。

Foundation Certificate Programme in Integrated Chinese Communication for Workplace
職業中文綜合溝通基礎證書課程

 

From 1 school term to 6 months. Minimum 80 hours.

 

Expected learning outcome:

For beginner entrants:

  • Ability to understand and reply to utterances containing selected vocabulary items and grammar points at the sentence level in daily conversations. 

  • Ability to read individual words in real life contexts and gain a basic understanding about the formation of Chinese characters.

 

For elementary level entrants:

  • Ability to apply selected vocabulary items and grammatical patterns at the sentence level in daily conversations with appropriate usage. 

  • Ability to read individual words and short phrases in real life contexts.

For intermediate level entrants: 

  • Ability to understand and reply to short connected utterances containing selected vocabulary items and grammatical structures in most real life conversations.

  • Ability to recognize and read Chinese characters and readings at the sentence level in real life contexts. 

For advanced level entrants: 

  • Ability to apply selected vocabulary items and grammatical structures in short connected utterances in most real life conversations with appropriate usage. 

  • Ability to comprehend and read Chinese readings at paragraph level in real life contexts.

Foundation Certificate Programme in Chinese Reading
中文閱讀基礎證書課程

 

3 school terms or 1 year. Minimum 80 hours.

 

Expected learning outcome:

For beginner entrants: 

  • Ability to read individual words and short phrases in real life contexts and has a basic understanding about the formation of Chinese characters. 

 

For elementary level entrants: 

  • Ability to recognize and read Chinese characters and readings at the sentence level in real life contexts; 

  • Ability to copy and reproduce from memory a modest number of isolated words or phrases in context.

For intermediate level entrants: 

  • Ability to comprehend and read Chinese readings at paragraph level in real life contexts.

 

For advanced level entrants: 

  • Ability to read and understand Chinese characters with authentic materials and contexts in professional settings; 

  • Ability to write short messages, postcards and simple notes and to express themselves within the context in which the language was learned.
